Research by consumer watch dog 'Which?', found that many websites automatically add unwanted extras and upgrades to a purchase, with out warning the customer. For example, many travel websites add expensive flight upgrades, access to the airport lounge and seven days car hire to a short haul flight purchase.

Which? surveyed several companies, and meticulously went through their websites to test whether any extras or upgrades would sneakily be added to the total. Some of their findings were quite disturbing, for example on one travel website an international visa was added to the total, at £27 per person. Not only is this a devious add on, it is also an extremely inflated price, as they can be purchased for £9. Furthermore, many websites automatically add their travel insurance onto the total price, without warning the customer.

Are Wild Animals Ever Really Tame?

Last week it was reported that a British tourist had been attacked by ‘tame’ cheetahs, as she visited an animal park in South Africa. The 60 year old woman from Aberdeen was visiting ‘Kragga Kamma Game Reserve’ near Port Elizabeth with her husband Archie when she was ‘mauled’.

The reserve welcomes tourists to enter wild animal enclosures to pet the Cheetahs and have photographs taken. The two Cheetahs, named Mark and Monty had been raised by the park since they were born, and had never been aggressive towards people before.

Apparently, an eight year old girl was also with the Cheetahs, but become frightened and started to run, the Cheetahs then chased and attacked her, when Mrs D’Mello tried to help she was also attacked, and needed stitches.

It is important to point out that these are very powerful wild animals, they should never be treated as pets and should be approached gently. Their natural instinct is to attack/play with prey which is running, and they are much more likely to attempt this with a creature they can sense is young and afraid.

Redundancies at BMI

week it was announced that over 1,200 jobs at BMI will be lost; the
redundancies come as BMI is taken over by IAG. British Airways commented that
the job losses are regrettable, but because of the current economic climate BMI
is currently haemorrhaging £3 million every week. Therefore, without the merger
BMI would almost certainly have closed, leaving over 2,700 employees without a
job. In theory, this means that 1,500 jobs have been saved by this business
strategy, and more could potentially be created when/if the company becomes

Olympics Damaging UK Tourism?

According to a survey by Travelex, Britons; who would usually holiday in the UK, are choosing to go further afield to avoid the Olympics this year. The survey found that over 10 million people are planning to head abroad during the Olympics, to avoid the disruption the games are bound to cause.

A Lesson in Airplane Etiquette

We have all been there, you queue up at the check in desk at the airport and you see a large group of men going on tour or on a stag do, who are already talking and singing loudly and you think, please say they aren’t getting on my flight!

However, they always do, and most groups drink and shout through out the entire flight, making everyone crazy. Even little children who would normally have been screaming and kicking your seat are embarrassed and shocked into submission by their behaviour.

Such a scene seems to have taken place last week involving Gavin Henson, famous for his relationship with Charlotte Church as well as his sporting career. Henson has served as an important reminder to everyone of the importance of good airplane behaviour.

Henson was on a flight returning from a match in Glasgow last week when he apparently started to throw ice cubes at other passengers. The rugby star, who admitted that he had been drinking heavily, has since been sacked from his team following his behaviour.

The lesson here - to help avoid any unnecessary travel stress, let’s all remember airplane etiquette, namely:

. Control bored children – obviously small children are going to get bored during a long flight, so pack enough books, toys and games to keep them amused.

Thefts in the air

Two people were arrested recently, as they were caught stealing from passengers during an airplane journey. Two men, who were travelling from Jakarta to Singapore, rifled through their fellow passengers hand luggage, which was stored in the over head bins, looking for money and other items to steal.

The passengers, who were asleep, reading or watching films, were shocked when the two men were caught and detained by airplane staff, and made to return their loot. The duo was then arrested at Changi Airport where police were waiting. Apparently, this is only one of a string of similar incidents which have occurred very recently.

Problems in Fiji

On Monday it was announced that Fiji, the South Pacific Island, has declared a state of emergency. Over the weekend the country was hit by extreme flash flooding, forcing thousands to evacuate certain areas and at least three deaths.

The weather also caused massive power cuts, and many roads had to be closed. Therefore, the Fijian Government have banned any tourists or visitors from entering the country. Meanwhile, holidaymakers already on the island are still desperately trying to leave, as the weather is expected to get worse, with cyclones predicted.

Across Europe, dozens of flights were cancelled on the 27th March 2012, as airport staff went on strike. Flights from and to Italy, Milan, Spain and Germany had to be cancelled and caused severe disruption as baggage handlers refused to work.

Airlines were urging passengers to check if their flight had been cancelled before travelling to the airport. Furthermore, if their flight did take off, passengers were advised to only bring hand luggage – to avoid further disruption when they landed.

Eurostar caused disruption to hundreds of passengers last week as it was forced to cancel services due to a faulty power cable. The problems came at one of the busiest times of the year, during Paris Fashion Week. This meant that models and visitors alike were trapped on trains over night, and others faced cancellations and hours of delays.
