Gap Year Mistakes

It is extremely common for teenagers and young adults who are travelling abroad on gap years, first holidays or sporting tours, to commemorate their new found freedom by getting a tattoo or piercing to mark the event. Sadly, however, it has recently been reported in the travel news that a boy, who got a tattoo whilst travelling through Australia, returned home only to find that he had contracted HIV.

These kinds of occurrences are all too common, as people are attracted by the extremely low prices offered by tattoo and piercing parlours abroad, plus the new found freedom and wish to rebel. However, using a budget parlour can be dangerous, as the equipment is often not properly sterilized between customers, and this creates an extremely high risk of infection and disease. Furthermore, tattoos and piercings come with a strict after care regime, which many holidaymakers fail to understand if there is a language barrier.

Health Authorities obviously strongly advise against getting tattoos and piercings in a foreign country, and in fact warn against any procedures which carry the risk of breaking the skin. For example, razors used in male haircuts, tools used in manicures and injections/stitches. They advise that you directly ask to see the tools sterilized before you allow a procedure, and to always carry a first aid kit when travelling.

This is extremely sensible advice, and another piece of sensible advice is to make sure you protect yourself against unforseen medical bills whilst you are away, by making sure that you have medical travel insurance.

Women have more travel sense

Unfortunately, women tend to form the butt of many jokes, for example;
· What should you give a woman who has everything? A man to show her how to work it!
· Why do women have smaller feet than men? It's one of those 'evolutionary things that allows them to stand closer to the kitchen sink!
· Most accidents happen at home! And the men have to eat them!

However, although men hate to admit it, the female of the species is widely accepted as the more mature and sensible sex; on the whole women tend to be more thoughtful and thorough when making important decisions.

A recent by Lastminute.com has confirmed this idea, as their ‘Female Travel and Lifestyle Report’ found that a rather sizeable 40% of all women surveyed said that they always buy travel insurance before they travel.

A further 14% of women proved very thorough by cleverly declaring that they would not book a hotel before checking that it had a decent cancellation policy first! From all of the women surveyed, the biggest reason most invested in travel insurance was a fear of travel disruptions, such as flight cancellations. Quite interestingly, only a miniscule 2% of women surveyed said they do not travel overseas.

If you’re planning a holiday or trip any time soon, listen to your wife, girlfriend, mum, sister or even daughter! Invest in a top quality travel insurance policy before you travel.

Holidaymakers taken ill abroad

It has recently been reported that several people who had all stayed in the same hotel - the Diamante Beach Hotel in Spain, have been admitted to hospital after contracting Legionnaires' disease. Sadly two male holiday makers have died from the outbreak, and at least three more people – all in their 70s and 80s have been admitted to hospital.

More positively a few people have been successfully treated and discharged. All the people affected so far had recently stayed at the hotel, and reported flu like symptoms. All British holiday makers who were still staying at the hotel have been successfully placed in other accommodation.

This frightening and quite unusual holiday disaster just goes to show how important it is to invest in top quality travel insurance before you travel. Snow disruption!

After the dramatic amount of snow fall on Saturday 4th February, The Met Office issued nine weather warnings to anyone attempting to travel in the freezing and icy weather conditions. In fact, some areas of Britain faced 16cm or 6inches of snow fall, a lot more than the predicted 5-10cm.

Unsurprisingly the weather caused major problems to all forms of travel, including trains, roads and motorways. Hundreds of vehicles came to a basic standstill and were stuck for hours on the M25 and M40 because of the weather, and hundreds more throughout Britain were forced to abandon their cars at the roadside on Saturday night.

However, the biggest disruption seems to have been to air travel. Heathrow airport was forced to cancel more than half of their 1,300 scheduled flights over the weekend, and hundreds of passengers were left stranded at UK airports.

To defend against major delays and cancellations, it is important that you protect yourself before you travel.

All Holidaysafe best buy travel insurance policies protect against cancellations, medical emergencies (including Doctor led medical emergency helpline 24 hours a day, every day of the year), theft or damage to personal belongings or cash and travel documents and much more.

Can Yoga at the airport ease stress?

It is the part of a holiday that most of us dread, the very beginning of the journey in fact – the airport. Most people find the airport experience, with the queues and threat of delays extremely stressful and verging on traumatic. However, one airport in San Francisco has attempted to combat their customer’s stress levels with the first ever airport Yoga Lounge.

San Francisco Airport has taken the norm of a cramped and noisy departure lounge to the next level, by creating a calming blue room in which all noise is banned and the relaxing practice of Yoga can be enjoyed. The room was designed after a suggestion from a passenger, as part of a refurbishment of the airport’s terminal 2. The new lounge is the first yoga room at any airport in the world, and gives passengers the time to properly relax and stretch the body before a long and taxing flight.

The Rise of the Snap Years

It appears that the number of people taking Gap Years has fallen dramatically in recent times, not surprising when you consider the rise in university tuition fees and the current shortage of jobs. Therefore, ‘Snap Years’ have become extremely popular, a snap year is like a gap year only much shorter, because the traveller can only afford a journey which lasts a few weeks at a time.

According to a survey conducted by LV less than 8% of travellers can afford to be away from home for more than four months at any one time. In the past, the biggest proportion of people taking gap years were students about to start university, however the number of people who want and are financially able to take a gap year before University has dropped by a substantial 56% during the last 5 years according to the 2011 survey.

LV suggest that the average snap year lasts around 5 weeks at a times, and according to another survey by Projects-Abroad.org, in 2011 alone there was a 28% rise in the number of UK students taking snap years.

Whether you are planning a gap year or a snap year, visiting www.holidsaysafe.co.uk should be top of your priority list.

Could a holiday abroad actually save you money?

According to high street travel agent Thomas Cook, travellers are not only making a holiday abroad a priority in 2012, but they could also save money by holidaying abroad rather than in Britain.

Foolowing their annual customer survey they discovered that over 30% said that a foreign holiday was a major priority in 2012, + 1% from the 2011 survey. However, unsurprisingly considering the current economic climate, one in five of all people surveyed commented that they aimed to spend less on, and during, their holiday this year.

The results are not in the least surprising; Britons are increasingly stressed and so need a holiday in order to relax. Furthermore, because they will need to budget to afford the holiday, they are not willing to risk bad weather by holidaying in Britain. In fact, only 17% were planning a holiday in Briton this year, -1% from 2011.

Unsurprisingly Thomas Cook are pleased with this data, and are encouraging the trend, stating that it could in fact be cheaper to holiday abroad. Apparently the UK is the most expensive place to holiday in Europe, compared to countries like Spain who offer great value on holiday essentials, such as food and sun tan lotion.

No matter where you decide to holiday in 2012, just remember that you cannot afford to skimp on the essentials. Visit www.holidaysafe.co.uk for top quality travel insurance policies to suit any budget and trip. Without insurance you could potentially leave yourself exposed to expensive medical bills, the risk of cancellation charges or be unprotected if your treasured gadgets or belongings are damaged or stolen.
