Backpacking to the world cup?
With just three days to go until the World Cup party kicks off in Cape Town, finishing touches are being made to preparations for an influx of tens of thousands of people.
The city is to host a fan festival with crowds of up to 25,000 expected the night before its brand new stadium at Green Point hosts Uruguay's clash with France on Friday.
Police are all around the city; riding up and down on motorbikes, on foot and in cars.
They dwarf the numbers of fans on the streets - no chances are being taken by a national force that has promised the "safest world cup ever"
The ground itself looks impressive, as it should - it cost £400m to build and is going to host eight World Cup games, including England's clash with Algeria on June 18.
However, there's no chance of ordinary fans getting up close to admire the 68,000-seater construction. The security around it is super-tight.
A ring of steel, policed by dozens of security guards who look profoundly bored - and lack the friendliness visitors encounter everywhere else - prevents anyone from getting within 100 yards.
Around the ground, there is still plenty of work hastily being done to get the roads and pavements ready in time for the first game. Manholes are being put into place, pavement slabs laid and road signs put up.
Staff at backpacking hostels in Long Street, known as Cape Town's answer to New Orleans, reported that a lot of fans had already taken rooms - particularly from Mexico and Brazil.
Many are taking the chance to see what locals call the Mother City, attracted by its stunning setting against the backdrop of Table Mountain.
